PREY Is The Game To Play In 2017

prey video gamePREY has only been out a couple of days and I am so excited about this game. That’s really saying something since I don’t really tend to get excited over video games.  It’s also put out by Bethesda, which is a big shot in the arm.  They tend to put out games I like.

In order to get my attention, a game has to go beyond the typical genres and have a deeper storyline than most. They have to go above and beyond the norm. Good graphics are nice, but not essential. Story and uniqueness is what grabs my attention. PREY has done this.

Here’s the break-down:

“In PREY, you awaken aboard Talos I, a space station orbiting the moon in the year 2032. You are the key subject of an experiment meant to alter humanity forever – but things have gone terribly wrong. The space station has been overrun by hostile aliens and you are now being hunted. As you dig into the dark secrets of Talos I and your own past, you must survive using the tools found on the station — your wits, weapons, and mind-bending abilities. The fate of the Talos I and everyone aboard is in your hands.”

I have, to this point, refused to watch any player’s game-play. Usually I will look up a game on Twitch to see if it may be a game I want. With PREY, I was convinced since I saw the first trailer and I just do not want anything spoiled for me.

With what I have seen, PREY is very reminiscent of the Bioshock games in their style, look, and unique story. I’m sure that is one reason that I am so excited about it. I have been a huge fanboy of the Bioshocks since the first one.

New video games tend to run about $60 anymore, but I found where I can grab it at a very affordable price.

If you’re looking for something exciting that will keep you involved, I think PREY is going to be the game to do it in 2017. If you are playing it yourself, leave a comment and let me know your thoughts. No spoilers, please! 😉

Showing Doctor Who Some Love

I was a noob to Doctor Who and his exploits until recently.  Although the phenomenon began decades ago, I was never exposed to The Doctor until a couple years back.  Strange for a nerd, right?

I cut my teeth on the 9th Doctor (played by Christopher Eccleston) and his then sidekick, Rose Tyler.  This was the first series of the show’s revival in 2005.  I instantly fell in love with Doctor Who.  The episodes were exciting, fun, humorous, sometimes emotional, and pretty much self-contained.  A new adventure every episode!

Fun story for you.   As a Background Actor/Extra, I’ve gotten to work in productions shot here in Portland, such as GRIMM, Leverage, The Librarians, and Portlandia, for almost a decade so far.  Every once in a while, I also have to opportunity to do a movie shoot.  In early January of this year, a film called Bad Samaritan was being shot at a prison here in Portland.  One of the stars happened to be David Tennent, who portrayed the 10th Doctor in the Doctor Who series.  It was a two day shoot where I played a detective.  Just a fun time that I thought I’d share.

The latest Doctor (Peter Capaldi) hasn’t captured me as much as the 9th and 10th Doctors did.  Not sure exactly why.  Regardless, I’ve been grabbing some Doctor Who goodies here and there to decorate up my apartment and use for my set on my Old Nerd Reviews YouTube channel.  I particularly enjoy my Tardis and 9th Doctor Funko Pops.  I still need to grab a 10th Doctor Pop.  I LOVE these Funko Pop Vinyl things!

I’d like to know who your favorite Doctor is and why.  Also, feel free to share any Doctor Who memories special to you.  Thanks for listening to my ramblings and I’ll see you at Old Nerd Reviews. 😉

Grow Your YouTube Channel Faster! | The Tools I Use

I have one tools that has helped grow my YouTube channel more than anything else and it’s TubeBuddy.

I love YouTube!  I’m sure that’s not news to any one of you.  I’ve been on the video platform and been a YouTube creator since 2006.  Throughout all that time, I have made a lot of mistakes, but have learned a lot more.  Implementing that knowledge as I’ve moved forward has helped me grow a few of my present channels to a really nice degree.  Isn’t it always better when there is someone that has trod the beaten path before you so you don’t have to weather the bumps yourself?  Being able to get the solid information, know the good tools, get the great advice, and know how it all works together is pure gold!  Helping people take a shorter and more direct road to online success is a real passion of mine.  Today, the tool I want to share with you is TubeBuddy.

I have used many tools and services for many different things, both free and paid, but there are only a few that I became a fanboy of, in the truest sense of the word.  TubeBuddy is the go-to tool I use every single day to grow my YouTube channels, more specifically, my Old Nerd Reviews channel.

TubeBuddy is a browser extension that works it’s way into your YouTube channel to help you find trending topics, top keywords, best times to post your videos, create better meta data, A/B tests, easy social posting, and so much more.  One of the many groovy things about it is that the creators keep adding new features to it and the price for a paid version stays the same (the free version is great, but the paid version takes it all the next level, believe me!).  When I discovered TubeBuddy and all it could do to help me grow my channel and do tedious and monotonous things so much easier, I almost threw money at it!  Now, I cannot imagine doing without it.  There are very few tools or services that I recommend to people and let them know that they are a must-have.  TubeBuddy is definitely one of those few on that fairly short list.

Let me show you a few videos that I’ve created to show off a few of the features:

Those are a few of the videos I’ve created to show off the power of TubeBuddy.  There are some more and even more to be made.

Anyway, these introduce a few features and they haven’t even scratched the surface of all that it does.  If you want to grow and market your own YouTube channel faster and easier, check out TubeBuddy to get the full monty of everything it offers.  We’re all in this thing together! 😉

Charge Mobile Faster With A Portable Power Charger

If you’re someone who works online and mobile, one of the primary things in your arsenal should be a portable power charger. It’s just something you have to have, especially when you’re mobile yourself and out on the go.

Portable Power Charger

I have my Google Chromebook, my Nexus 7 tablet, and my mobile phone. That’s enough devices that are going to die a slow power death when I’m working down in Portland or wherever I may be as they are being used. With a portable power charger, it’s not a problem not being around a power source to recharge.

I have two. I recently picked up a Energio SLIM Portable Charger and I also have an AmazonBasics Portable Power Bank. Both are basically the same thing, just different companies. While the Energio SLIM is a tad lighter and includes an adapter for charging your iPhone, the AmazonBasics has a sweet carrying pouch to protect the charger. That is really about the only differences. They both get good ratings on Amazon.

I like having two with me, although I really doubt I will ever NEED both for a single outing. But, better safe than sorry. It’s like having two batteries for my camera. I like to be prepared for anything. Maybe someone I’m with may need a charge and then I’ll be glad I brought both of the power chargers along. They will, too 😉

You can see my review of the Energio SLIM Portable Charger below. I haven’t yet reviewed the AmazonBasics Portable Power Bank, but here’s a link so you can check it out yourself.

Both chargers run around $20 a piece and they will charge your mobile devices in half the time it takes to do it by plugging it into the wall. Put your tablet and phone in Airplane Mode to help it charge even faster.

Bottom line is, you need to make sure you don’t run out of juice when you’re in the field and a portable power charger will do the trick.

Have a FREAKING AWESOME DAY and I’ll see you on the channel!

My Samsung SSD 850 EVO Is Here!

Hi, gang!

I’m so pumped about this! I have been wanting to upgrade some of my computer components for quite some time now and one of the first things to upgrade was my hard drive. I’ve heard the positive buzz about SSD (solid state drive) since they first came out (a lot of times from my son), but until recently, they were really expensive.

If you don’t know what a SSD is, in a nutshell, it’s a super fast hard drive without any moving parts. No platter to spin up (or slow down!), no noise, and, as I said, super fast. Remember how your system used to boot up and run when you first broke it out of it’s box? That’s how these solid state drives are ALL THE TIME!

So, after doing my research, I opted for this Samsung SSD 850 EVO, 250 gig. The prices have gone way down from what they were and that was the pull-the-trigger point for me. It’s really thin, small, and light.

Not to mention the fact that I wanted my new Windows 10 OS to boot up and run like a champ. I’m planning to put some of my more graphically intensive games and my video editing software on the drive. The remainder of the stuff that speed doesn’t matter will go over on my secondary Western Digital drive.

I hate getting into my computer and doing things. It’s a bit intimidating for me. I’m a software guy, not a hardware guy. The software and installation guide that came with the Samsung SSD makes it a snap to install and get up and running, especially if you don’t want to do a fresh install of your operating system.

All you need to do is install the software, plug the drive in via USB, and use that software to ghost over your primary drive with your OS on it to the new SSD. Power down your computer, install the SSD inside as your primary and the other drive as your secondary (or whatever), and you’re finished. THAT’S IT! I love it!

I got my wife one too for her new computer system. My son also got one for himself and his wife. With the speed my wife will experience for the first time, it’s going to blow her away! Hahaha!

The ratings on the Samsung SSD’s are really good. That matters to me a lot. Company fluff is just that. I want to hear from real people who have used the product. And, as I said, the prices have come down a lot.

If you’d like to take a look at my Samsung SSD 850 EVO, it’s right here.

Just a solid recommendation from me to you! Take care and I’ll see you on Old Nerd Reviews on YouTube.

Taco Bell Bacon Club Chalupa Fail

I Reviewed Taco Bell’s Bacon Club Chalupa…Wait. No I Didn’t.

Taco Bell's Bacon Club ChalupaHola, Gang!

I was out and about today and my wife wanted something from Taco Bell for lunch. Being the freaking awesome husband I am, I obliged.

I thought that as long as we were there, I’d take advantage of the time and review their new Bacon Club Chalupa. “Crispy bacon over juicy, grilled chicken in a chewy chalupa shell with avocado sauce, crispy lettuce, ripe tomatoes, and three cheese blend.” At least, that is what the fluff on the web site stated.

We swung into the drive-thru and there it was on the menu, in all it’s glory:

BACON CLUB CHALUPA – $2.69.  Sounds sweet!

After ordering the item and a couple of their Freezes (it was Happy Hour where we could pick them up for $1 a piece), I noticed that the order screen read that the Bacon Club Chalupa was $3.29. That was curious.

“Is there anything else I can get you?” asked the drive-thru dude.

“Isn’t the Bacon Club Chalupa $2.69?” I inquired.

“Well, the menu is wrong. It’s really $3.29.”

“Can you make it $2.69?”

“No, we can’t.”

Really?  When you venture into a store and an item is listed at a certain price, the store must give it to you at that price whether it rings up right or wrong. That’s been the way it’s been since I was a wee lad. Anything else is just wrong. If you went to a mall and found a shirt marked at a certain price, you’d expect to get it at that price and not have them jack it up on you once you brought it up the register. It’s pretty basic and has been the way of consumerism forever.

Obviously, this particular Taco Bell doesn’t know what we know. The bottom line is we changed the order and I ended up pretty peeved.

So, I’m sorry about the review that never was, but it’s the principal of the whole thing. As far as I’m concerned, it was a total lack of good customer service not to mention integrity on their part.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and I’ll have three new reviews coming this next week!

FOLLOW-UP: iVUE Broken Camera Glasses

I wanted to post a quick update to let you know more about the cracked iVUE Horizon 1080p Camera Glasses saga.

First, to catch you up in case you don’t know: the frames of my camera glasses cracked one month after purchasing them and I had to return them.  Here’s my review video on the whole thing:

iVUE commented on the video and told me that they have corrected the frames problem as of January 2015 (I bought mine in December of 2014; great timing, huh?).

So, I just purchased a new pair last night to see if that is indeed the case.  Did they actually correct the problem or was that just nothing more than reputation management?

I’ll keep you updated, both here and on the YouTube channel…. 😉

Fast Food Order Frustration

As an old nerd, I tend to rant and rave.  After living as many years as I have, I tend not to care too much about what I say.  You can expect that as well as you age (maybe you do now!).  Poor service at a restaurant is a big frustration to me; especially when there is really very little excuse for it.

I have been to the Taco Bell at 11717 NE 65th Avenue in Vancouver, WA many times over.  Either I’m ordering dinner for myself and my wife or I’m grabbing something for a review.  Up until recently, the orders have been straight off the menu and everything has been fine.  A week ago, I tried the Triple Layer Nachos off their Dollar Cravings menu.Taco Bell Triple Layer Nachos

I love nachos and sometimes I just like to keep it simple.  This particular item consists of chips, nacho cheese, refried beans, and a tangy red sauce.  I found that the red sauce is way too hot for me, so after the first time of setting my mouth aflame, I began asking them to leave the red sauce off.

For one reason or another, this seems to be too tall an order for the people who work there.  I don’t understand why.  It’s a simple single item and leave one thing off.  I’ve ordered this when they weren’t even busy to give you a better grasp of my gripe.

They have messed this up twice now.  The first time, I had the common sense to check my order before I left and had them fix the problem right away.  This last time, I ended up driving all the way home, only to find a batch of red sauce squarely in the middle of the chips and cheese.

This is not complicated and, as I consumer, I believe that we all should be getting what we pay for.  In this case, less than what we pay for.  Leave something off!

One the positive side, they were always apologetic and willing to fix my order right away.  I just need them to get this one, single thing correct and all will be right with the world.

Have you had experiences like this before?  I’m sure I’m far and away from the only one.  Tell me your story in the comments before.
